? Citizenship by Descent in Nepal
(1) If Father or Mother is a Nepali Citizen
A person who has completed 16 years of age and whose father or mother is a Nepali citizen can apply for citizenship by descent with the following documents:
- Application form (as per Schedule-1)
- Citizenship certificate of father or mother, or of relatives within three generations
- Birth certificate or recommendation from the local level confirming birthplace and relationship
- Relationship verification certificate (if using relatives’ citizenship within three generations)
- Academic certificate (if available)
If documents are not available:
- Local inquiry report (Sargamin) conducted in presence of local representatives (as per Schedule-3)
- Identification (Sanakhat) by at least two local citizens and one local official (as per Schedule-4)
Note: Authorities may conduct further investigation if identification seems suspicious.
? (2) Person with Unknown Parents (Found within Nepal)
A person aged 16 years or above who does not know their parents can apply with:
- Application form (Schedule-1)
- Recommendation from an orphanage/childcare institution (if raised there)
- Recommendation from local government
- Identification by legal guardian (if applicable)
- Academic certificate (if available)
? (3) Children of Parents Who Obtained Citizenship by Birth (Before 2072/2015)
If both parents are Nepali citizens:
- Application form
- Birth certificate
- Citizenship certificates of both parents
- Recommendation from local authority confirming relationship and birthplace
- Academic certificate (if available)
? (4) Person Born to Nepali Mother (Father Unknown)
For a person aged 16+:
- Application form
- Birth certificate
- Mother’s citizenship certificate
- Recommendation from local authority
- Proof that father is unidentified (including self-declaration)
If the mother is deceased or mentally unfit, additional documents like death certificate or medical proof are required.
? (5) Citizenship by Descent under Special Provision (Section 3(6))
Required documents:
- Birth certificate
- Mother’s citizenship or proof of Nepali nationality
- Father’s citizenship certificate
- Recommendation from local authority
? Citizenship by Marriage (Naturalized Citizenship)
A foreign woman married to a Nepali citizen can apply with:
- Application form (Schedule-7)
- Proof of marriage (local authority recommendation)
- Valid visa (if required)
- Proof of process of renouncing foreign citizenship
? Naturalized Citizenship (Other Cases)
Includes:
- Children born to Nepali mother married to a foreigner
- Persons born abroad but residing in Nepal
- Persons whose father is later confirmed as foreign
Required documents:
- Mother’s citizenship certificate
- Birth certificate
- Proof of permanent residence in Nepal
- Self-declaration of not holding foreign citizenship
? Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) Citizenship
For persons who:
- Previously held Nepali citizenship (self or parents/grandparents)
- Now hold foreign citizenship (except SAARC countries)
Required:
- Proof of previous Nepali citizenship
- Foreign citizenship certificate
- Proof of residence abroad
- Commitment to follow Nepal’s laws

- Citizenship is issued only after 16 years of age
- Applications are submitted to the Chief District Officer (CDO)
